Coming in a new package with a new name, SSL have recreated one of their most famous product. The Bus Comp Classic is 1U rack-mounted compressor, which is a modern take on the SSL Bus Compressor. Modern, while staying true to the original concept.
The front panel features the controls you would expect, with Threshold, Attack, Ratio, Release, Make-up Gain and side-chain high-pass filter controls. The Attack, Ratio, Release and SC HPF controls feature stepped adjustments for precise and repeatable operation.
SSL have not only faithfully recreated a classic piece, but they have taken it even further with subtle tweaking of ratios and release times, as well as the position side-chain high-pass filter, as well as a stereo external side chain input for even more flexibility and versatility.
One of the key additions is the VCA Drive control, which allows users to shape the compressor’s tonal character. With Drive switched out, the Bus Comp Classic delivers the transparent sound and punchy transient response associated with SSL’s SuperAnalogue designs, as found in the 9000 Series and Duality consoles. Increasing the Drive introduces more colour and harmonic character, moving the sound towards the character of the FX384 and classic 4000 Series consoles. This added flexibility gives the Bus Comp Classic the ability to move between clean, controlled bus compression and a more characterful, vintage-inspired sound.
