What is Production:101?

Production:101 is an all-inclusive ‘college-level’ course, split into articles, videos and supporting media. This ongoing series will include the very basics of sound and engineering, through basics of recording, mixing and master, as well as not only how to do things, but why we do things, and what other options might be. It will also feature more basic scientific principles such as the basics of sound, the ear and acoustics, among other subjects.

All of this content follows what would be found on college/university syllabuses, and can most definitely be followed instead of, or alongside ant formal education on the subjects.

The entirety of Production:101 will be available on our website, and most importantly, all Production:101 content will be, and will remain, absolutely free.

While all content in Production:101 will features products from different manufacturers, the aim of all content, whether written or video, will be gear agnostic, with an aim of teaching how to do something, no matter what gear the audience member has. Obviously, there will be sometimes where a certain workflow is attached to a piece of equipment, but the plan is to give multiple examples to aid in understanding.

At the end of each year, all relevant information will be collated into a ‘living document’ for each subject. So, someone who comes along in say 3 years’ time, can download a single PDF that collates all of the Production:101 content pertaining to say recording, or mixing, or microphone selection. Again, these ‘digests will also perpetually remain free to any and all users.

Over the next few years Production:101 will also feature a plethora of “Guest Teachers’ from within the wider industry, who will come in and write content for the course, as well as, on occasions, hold clinic, talks and Q&As.
